What is a State Inspection?
A state inspection is an annual safety and emissions check required by Massachusetts to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive and meets environmental standards. Our certified technicians inspect key components such as brakes, tires, lights, suspension, steering, and emissions systems. It’s important to note that a state inspection is not the same as vehicle registration, they are separate processes. Registration is handled through the RMV, while your inspection must be done at a licensed inspection station like ours. Once your vehicle passes, we’ll apply a new inspection sticker to your windshield, valid for one year from the month of inspection.
Inspection Checklist
During your Massachusetts state inspection, our certified technicians will review the following components to ensure your vehicle is safe and meets required standards:
Brakes – We check for wear, performance, and any signs of damage or fluid leaks.
Tires – Tread depth, condition, and inflation are inspected to ensure safe contact with the road.
Steering and Suspension – We look for worn or damaged components that could affect vehicle handling or ride quality.
Lights and Signals – All exterior lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights must be fully operational.
Windshield and Wipers – The windshield is checked for cracks or chips, and wipers must function properly to maintain clear visibility.
Horn – We verify that your horn works and is audible at a proper distance.
Mirrors – Both side and rearview mirrors must be present and intact for safe driving.
Seatbelts – We ensure all seatbelts are present, accessible, and in proper working condition.
Exhaust System – We check for leaks, noise issues, and ensure it meets emissions standards.
Dashboard Warning Lights – Your vehicle must not display active warning lights related to emissions or safety.
License Plates and Registration Sticker – Plates must be clearly visible and securely fastened.
Emissions System (OBD for newer vehicles) – On-board diagnostics (OBD) are scanned for fault codes in vehicles 15 years old and newer.
What to Bring
Your Vehicle Registration – You’ll need to present your valid Massachusetts (or out of state) registration card. This confirms your vehicle is properly registered with the RMV.
Payment for the Inspection Fee – The state-mandated inspection fee is $35. We accept cash only.
Your Vehicle – It must be in a condition that allows us to safely complete the inspection. Make sure it’s not overloaded with cargo, and all doors and hatches can be opened.
Any Prior Inspection Failure Sheet (if applicable) – If your vehicle failed a previous inspection, bring the failure sheet to help us focus on the corrected items.
Failed Inspection? What’s Next
If your vehicle does not pass the state inspection, don’t worry—our team is here to help guide you through the next steps.
You will receive a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) that outlines exactly what needs to be corrected. This may include safety-related issues, emissions system faults, or visible defects like worn tires or malfunctioning lights.
You have 60 days from the date of the failed inspection to complete the necessary repairs and return for a free re-inspection at the same location.
Our shop offers both mechanical and body repair services, so in many cases, we can handle the necessary work on-site and help get you back on the road quickly and safely. If repairs are made elsewhere, just bring your VIR when you return.
If you’re not sure what the failure means or how to fix it, just ask—we’re happy to walk you through it.
